Independent and Citizen Journalism in #Ferguson
Via GigaOm: Crowd-powered journalism becomes crucial when traditional media is unwilling or unable:

Just as it did in Egypt and Ukraine, the stream of updates from Ferguson — both from amateur or non-journalists, eyewitnesses and professional reporters for various outlets — turned into a feed of breaking news unlike anything that non-Twitter users were getting from the major news networks and cable channels. Most of the latter continued with their regular programming, just as media outlets in Turkey and Ukraine avoided mentioning the growing demonstrations in their cities. In a very real sense, citizen-powered journalism filled the gap left by traditional media, which were either incapable or unwilling to cover the news.

Related, also via GigaOm: You can use your phone to film the police, even if they tell you not to.
Related, once again: Argus Radio was webcasting events last night from Ferguson via their Livestream channel and will start again today at 3pm.

Tips from the ASP: Taking the Perfect Surf Action Shot

For more photos and videos from the Samsung Galaxy 2014 ASP World Championship Tour, explore the Snapper Rocks Beach location page and follow surfers Kelly Slater (@kellyslater), Carissa Moore (@rissmoore10), Mick Fanning (@mfanno), Stephanie Gilmore (@stephaniegilmore), Gabriel Medina (@gabrielmedinaaa) and Courtney Conlogue (@courtneyconlogue).

The Association of Surfing Professionals (@asp) kicks off its 2014 World Championship Tour today in Australia’s Gold Coast. The world’s best male and female surfers will take to the water to compete for the highest scores from judges considering level of difficulty, innovation, variety, speed, power and flow.

Whether you’re attending the Quiksilver and Roxy Pros or simply getting a surf session in with friends, keep these tips from ASP photographers Kirstin Scholtz (@kirstinscholtz) and Kelly Cestari (@kc80) in mind:

  • Nothing will end a water session quicker than a leak. Protect your water housing from any possible damage.
  • You will never win a fight against the ocean, but the more time you spend shooting in the water the higher your success rate will be and your confidence will grow with each session.
  • Communicate with the surfer about the type of image you have in mind and it will come a lot easier. Build a good working relationship with them, so they trust you not to ruin their wave and you trust them not to injure you.
  • Early morning and late afternoon are often the most magical times to shoot surfing. There is nothing more beautiful than a surfer silhouetted against a glowing backlit wave or wave painted with purples and pinks reflecting the colors of sunset.
  • Keep looking for new angles. Shooting from behind the wave can make the face look steeper and the wave bigger. Shooting from above makes it look smaller and flatter.

Exploring the Big Four Ice Caves with @mattbg

To see more photos and videos of the Big Four Ice Caves, explore the Big Four Ice Caves location page.

Two hours outside of Seattle in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, a natural spectacle draws Instagrammers to Big Four Mountain: ice caves. Created from years of cascading water, warm winds and avalanche-deposited snow, the Big Four Ice Caves first attracted Los Angeles Instagrammer Matt Gee (@mattbg) a year ago. As a lover of epic landscapes, Matt immediately knew he had to plan a visit: “This was one place that I absolutely had to see in person. The photos I saw conveyed such an otherworldly and unique landscape.”

"Photographing the caves was an incredible experience. There was a beautiful backdrop of snow-covered mountains and the cascading waterfalls surrounding the caves created an amazing soundtrack for the experience." Capturing the caves’ magnitude was particularly tricky—a problem Matt solved after being drawn to the texture of the cave walls as a backdrop for portraits. "It was really important to have people in my shots to give the photos some scale," Matt says. "It was great to have the subject wearing a pop of color against the cool blues and whites of the walls."
